What may seem to make [the characters] exotic is simply my preference for the artists: I found among painters, musicians, actors, writers, sculptors a common ground and a common language necessary to me as an uprooted person, a woman in a sense without a country.     
登場人物をエキゾチックにしているように見えるのは、私が芸術家を好んで描くからにすぎない。私は、画家や音楽家、俳優、作家、彫刻家のあいだに、根をもたない人間、ある意味では故国をもたない女としての私に必要な、共通の地盤、共通の言語を見い出したのである。
